Noakhali Science and Technology University


Noakhali Science and Technology University popularly known as NSTU is a newly established public university in the coastal terrain Noakhali of Bangladesh. It is the 27th public university (out of 32) and 5th Science and technology university in Bangladesh. Its foundation stone was laid on 11 October 2003 and academic activities started in the year 2005. It has 2 faculty & 4 departments. It is running with 4 batch with 720 students till 2009. It has 39 teachers.

Background
Former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia laid the foundation stone of Noakhali Science and Technology University, NSTU, on 11 October 2003. Its construction work was formally inaugurated on 24 March 2005. It is the 5th in the row of twelve such universities the government has decided in 1997 to establish in the twelve erstwhile greater districts where there was no university. The aim of founding a science and technology university as defined in the project pro-forma is to mould merit into skilled work force and to develop centre of excellence to create and disseminate knowledge. Innovating new technologies and developing the old ones is also one of the R&D objectives of these universities.

Location
Noakhali University of Science and Technology( 22'47'31"N,91'06'07"E ) is being built at Sonapur eight kilometer south-west of Maijdee. It has a land area of 101 acres covering 93 Salla and 95 Noakhali Mouza. The site of the university is part of the land of a vast Char that stretches on the south to Char Jabbar, Char Bata, Char Wapda and Char Clark before it reaches the feebly flowing Bhulua river far beyond which lyes Hatiya and then the Nijhum Deep. Like the district itself Sonapur has a long history of erosion and accretion caused by the mighty Meghna on the west and the Bay of Bengal on the south.

Campus
As for being a new born university the construction of the varsity is not yet completed. Presently the campus consists of one Administrative building, one academic building, two male student hall, two female student hall, one teacher's and officer's dormitory, Vice Chancellor's building and a mosque. The campus has wide roads. There is sport field and two big ponds in the campus area.

Cultural Activities
NSTU is very conscious to preserve Bangladesh's own culture. It celebrates International Mother Language Day, Pahela Baishak, Independence Day and other national & international days with actual manner. Cultural competition occurs here every year. This competition includes songs, dance, recitation etc. NSTU is proud of its Debating Society. A recitation organization named, 'Jatiyo Kobita Porishod'(local name-Pata Neer) is running its activity successfully.

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology


Shahjalal University of Science and Technology or commonly known with its initials SUST, is a state-supported science and technology university located in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Established in 1987, it is the first science and technology university in Bangladesh. It is one of the most popular universities in Bangladesh according to the 4icu.org The university started its academic programme from 14 February, 1991 with three departments: physics, chemistry and economics. The campus is located in Kumargaon, approximately five kilometers away from Sylhet.
The university introduced the integrated honours course for the first time in Bangladesh and recently it has introduced the semester system from the 1996-97 session. Every year the existing systems are improving, new departments are going to be opened. According to the masterplan for this university ,which states that within a few years Shahjalal University of Science and Technology will be one of the finest institutions of this country.
The first convocation of SUST was held on the 29th April, 1998 and the second convocation of the university was held on the 6th December, 2007.
The University has introduced SMS Based Automated Registration of Admission Test procedure for the first time in Bangladesh.Interested students can complete the registration process through mobile messages.Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the system on September 13,2009.

Academics
SUST mainly enrolls undergraduate and graduate students.Students who want to get admission into SUST need to pass the admission test which is highly competitive.Admission test are arranged by the specific schools under the authority of admission council.In recent years,number of applicants for each seat has been stood at 12. SUST also welcomes foreign students.There is a significant number of foreign students especially from Nepal.There are some students in its affiliated medical college from Indian Kashmir.

Research
Some national and international Seminar and conferences on academic matters and scientific researches are held in this university. Recently the international conference on waste water treatment was held in SUST which was hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering and Polymer Science. The university launches "Online Journals" access facility to the teachers recently.

Sports
The students of this university also participate in various sports for recreation and the finest athletes regularly compete in inter-university games like football, handball, volleyball, basketball etc. SUST also have some varsity teams.There is a well equipped gymnasium adjacent to the university student health center. Students organize both inter-department and inter-university tournaments for popular games every year.There is a special club named "SPORTS SUST" for that,which is operating by the student body.Girls and teachers also participate in several games.
