Jagannath University is a government-financed public university located in Sadarghat, Dhaka the capital of Bangladesh.
History
Though this university received its university status in 2005 but it counts its history as an educational institution since 1858 when it was initially formed as Dhaka Brahma School. In 1884 its status was updated to higher secondary college which was further revised in 1975 when Jagannath started taking students in Honours and Masters programs. Its higher secondary program continued for 92 years until it was officially closed in 1982. In 2005 college was granted university status and became Jagannath University. On 22 June 2009 a bill was placed in the parliament to assign the president as chancellor replacing the prime minister.
Administration
Prof. Dr. Mezbah Uddin Ahmed is the current Vice Chancellor of the university whilst Prof. Farida Rahman and Prof. Dr. Swaukat Jahangir are performing as registrar and treasurer of the university respectively.
Academics
Now the University has 28 departments under 4 faculties. At present 359 teachers are engaged in providing quality education of around 27000 students in diverse field.
Faculty of Business Studies
This faculty is consist of four department. those are-
Department of Management: Management department is the leading dept of the faculty. From 2005 to present (29.014.10) four batches has been studying here. Each batch consists of 220 students.
Department of Accounting and Information System: Each batch consists of 220 students.
Department of Marketing: Each batch consists of 110 students.
Department of Finance: Each batch consists of 110 students.
There are 660 sitting for every session. Of them 440 for Management and Accounting, another 220 for Marketing and Finance. Student get 132 credit hour to complete the full course. Which is one of the heights credit hours among the universities of Bangladesh. There are eight semester and they have to complete those in four year. The dean of this faculty is Prof. Md. Abul Kalam Chowdhury. He is also the chairman of the management dept.
The university starts its BBA program in 2005. In past this university was under NU. Still now here are student of Honour's degree. Recently the MBA program has started in Dept. of Management and dept. of Accounting of Business Studies faculty.
